Gong Xi Fa Chai! Ang Pau Mei You Lai!
Tuesday, January 31st, 2006Here I am sitting down in my cubicle in the office…3rd day of Chinese New Year. Oh yeah, Happy New Year and Gong Xi Fa Chai to everyone who’s reading my pathetic blog. Why pathetic? Sit in my chair now and you’ll know the real meaning of patheticism (does this word actually exist?) for being in LaLa Land during Chinese New Year!
Well, rants aside. This is the first time in my life I am "celebrating" Chinese New Year outside my hometown. I am actually wondering if I am celebrating it at all…real different. As much as my two housemates are keen on celebrating this event, I could see in their faces now that they are no much better than me - feeling all bored out and moodless for the CNY.
I’m gonna list down some of the drastic differences on how I "celebrated" CNY. No new clothes - Well, although I did buy some new shirts, neck ties and boxers. I wore them waay before CNY. Sorta forgot abt the new clothes phenomenon for CNY actually. No red red everywhere - Back at home, I’m sure red is in. Well not here for me. No ang-pau decors… no CNY cards for decors as well. No lion dance - Doh! If got lion dance here in Bury Street, I think the whole Norwich will come flocking to see it! No CNY cookies - kuih kapit, kuih bangkit etc etc… can only imagine the taste.. sigh~ No ang pau - I guess this one I have to ask my dad to KIV first haha… apart from that, I guess I am missing out a lot on this.
I think the list will go on if I actually wanna crack my head on what I am missing out on CNY this year. To sum it up, I guess I am missing out the whole CHINESE NEW YEAR actually. Everything in life has a price to pay for I guess.
However, there are ways which my mates and I made up to celebrate CNY. This was how it went: 1st day of CNY - woke up darn late. Prolly around noon time. Then headed off to Norwich Sports Complex to play some badminton. Manage to join a group of Phillipinos who were organizing a inter cultural basketball game…and my team won, so I am holding on to a £5 Marks & Spencer gift voucher (Talk abt ang pou eh?! Hehe). Went back home and was dead tired… so slept through dinner and woke up to find that all the other guys have slept…so I crept out to buy myself a 1/4 pounder and a 7" Hawaiian chicken. Spend a good time being a midnight couch potato watching some series of LOST.
2nd day of CNY - Nothing much… its a working day. And after that my mates and I went out shopping for groceries. We end up buying some mandarin oranges… just to make us feel like we are actually within CNY mood. Havent even eaten them yet myself… but I have drank some juices made of mandarin oranges - I guess that counts as well. Decided that my room needed some spring cleaning…so off I went to re-organize my wardrobe and shelves…and finally a touch of potpouri I got from Tesco. So…its all set and smells nice at last.
We opened a bottle of French champagne, and ended the evening with a toast with Leong (Yeah… I know we used the wrong kinda glass for champagne but give us a break). We also got another bottle of Moet & Chandon… probably will keep for for chap goh meh.
For now… I’d wanna wish you guys out there a HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR and GONG XI FA CHAI!
