CSI - The Malaysian Version

Tuesday, November 29th, 2005

Well, I’m gonna yap about what took place yesterday noon, here in my office. Its kinda sad such a thing took place, right under the scrutiny of our so called office security. Actually, one of our manager’s notebook was stolen when he went out for lunch break. Crime scene : his desk. To be more precise on what actually happened, there was a bunch of movers, about 12 of them, who were shifting computers from Proton back here. The pathway they took from the main entrance to the store-room, passes through the victim’s desk.

Anyway, KC (the victim) only realized that his notebook was missing when he got back from lunch. When all the moving activity was all done. The immediate suspects were the movers, since no one else could have had gained access into our office without proper security tag cards. A phone call was made to TPM and these were the replies: "Oh itu CCTV memang ada… tapi belum activate punya la" (Yes, the CCTV is in place but it’s not being activated yet). Such a statement made me wonder why companies around here in TPM is paying so much for office rental when simple things like CCTV is in such a pathetic condition.

Next up, we headed to the police station down in Cheras to lodge a police report. It wasn’t really the notebook’s value that KC was after. It was the information and database he had inside it. I could understand that ‘cuz KC does a lot of business proposal stuff on that small 14" hp notebook. Anyway, KC made a phone call to the mover’s company while on the way to Cheras. It was with hopes that we could at least gain some form of coorperation from the manager to investigate into this. However a simplified version of his replies were as such: "I think its more on your side. Our staff have excellent records and I’m sure they do not steal any of our clients’ items before. Maybe you should open up the boxes of computers. It could be in there" - come on bitch! The notebook was stolen right off the table with its power cord left behind dangling! It can never be in the sealed boxes! Use your brains!

Now to the best part. We arrived at Cheras police station around 4pm. KC took a number and his queue was 3040 while the current number at that time was 3038. The "efficiency" of works from FOUR operating counters made us waited for more than 30 minutes before we could get to our turn to lodge a report.

There was this dude with a SAYA ANTI RASUAH badge, proudly attached to his neatly pressed uniform attended us. Let me say this: While it’s gonna take me about 10-15 minutes writing these whole shit load of blog… it took him approximately 30-45 minutes to prepare that silly report of no more than 15 lines! Goodness gracious! And after that we had to wait for a Sarjan who is the investigating officer for this case… Now… lets head on to the best part of our ever great Malaysian version of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation at its prime!

It was close to 6pm then. This dude was back in his office and we headed to see him, with very little hopes that he could do anything much. Anyway, the meet up was a joke. Which lead me to note them down here in this blog. Below is a simplified version of the conversation that took place in the sarjan’s office:

KC : We wanna report this case. Hopefully you can get some fingerprints done and investigate on it.

Sarjan : Oh… fingerprint tak boleh (taking out some samples). You tengok… fingerprint macam ni tak lengkap… so memang tak boleh la.

KC : We might have some CCTV recordings…

Sarjan : CCTV ah? CCTV pun tak boleh (taking out some samples). You tengok ini orang…Cina? Melayu? India? Saya pun tak tau la…ahh tengok blow up picture…you boleh nampak tak? Tak nampak kan?

KC : Well, how come we watch in TV the CSI all also can do?

Sarjan : Actually ah… kita bukan tak mau tolong. Kita tau macam mana punya… CCTV, fingerprint… tapi itu TV.. itu Amerika boleh la… kita masih tak boleh.

KC : Can you get the name list from the moving company and try investigate?

Sarjan : Mana ada name list? You pun tak ada name list, saya mana ada.

KC : You can call up…the company sure have a list of their employees. No one works for free…So they definitely have a name list for issuing salary and etc.

Sarjan : oh yeah betul juga tu… okeylah. Saya akan cuba hubungi company itu besok… you tunggu saya punya call ok?

Makes me wonder what the police boleh…hrmm…

As we walked towards the car park and passed by some signage that says "Berkhidmat Dengan Quality" and also "Cekap, Pantas & Amanah", I cant help but letting off a big disappointment sigh.

I’m sure lots of you guys out there know what all these are about. Sigh… Polis boleh? Malaysia Boleh? Maybe we are more boleh!

The Artist

Ok…one weird thing I came across during the buffet dinner I had on Friday night. Being seated at an isolated corner, I couldnt help but feeling awed by these paintings on the walls. They were works of Sandra Knyut, apparently a well known artist who mainly does murals of pop themed paintings. Beats the shit out of my brains if anyone would ask me what the paintings are all about. And for all these, I heard that she was paid in hundreds of thousands for her work on the restaurant’s interior. I’m posting them up here to share them… maybe you guys out there can get more insights to these artwork better than I could.Dsc00363

Buffet @ Sunway Hotel

Sunday, November 13th, 2005

Here comes another chapter of my session of food-fetish glutton self. Whatever! Here goes:Dsc00373

Went to Sunway Hotel for a buffet dinner on Friday night after office. To be frank, it was the first time I went into this hotel although I have passed its main entrance countless of times since I frequent Sunway Pyramid a lot. The restaurant can be accessed via the elevator. It’s located 13 floors - at the bottom of the reception hall. Weird if you’d ask me :P

Anyway, buffet menu is ok. I have had better elsewhere…and I have had worse. Dsc00348The food choices range from seafood like prawns, oysters, clams and softshell crabs to western steaks and more variation of soups. Dsc00351There were some variety of local delicacies as well, which I couldnt bother chomping down. Such were the fried beehun and some kari mee. Salad was a plenty. There was this make-your-own salad section which I enjoyed most. I basically used to much of the dried mince beef and Parmesan in my Ceasar Salad that it almost made me full by the time I wanted to go for my 2nd round of collection :P As for drinks, they come with a choice of coffee or tea and also fruit juices. Of course we do get "free" sky juices as well. By the time my tummy was about to give up, there comes the BBQ section. Choices fresh and hot from the BBQ pits: Fat sausages, beef and lamb, and some kinda fish which I didnt take. Add some sauce to it to spice it all up and get it ready to go down the already full tummy :P

Dsc00352_1And of course once these solid food are done for, the desserts are next on the hit list. Fancy some local tong-sui? Yerp, they have that here as well… Ice cream, cakes, and even the fancy make-it-yourself ice kacang. Nice… Finished everything off with a nice cuppa freshly brewed coffee…Dsc00355_1

Thanks to all these food on the list… i gotta go take a walk with a notch on my belt buckle loosen! Well, it wasnt that bad actually when one could access the nice night scene which I doubt you’d normally see when you go to Sunway Lagoon. :)

Well, the buffet package cost RM70/head, a lil’ bit steep if you’d ask me. But since it was only RM40 for that night due to some special discounts ;P - I wouldnt complain that much. After all, I did get more chances to experiment with my camera on night shots… and hey… a few shots of the infamous artist Sandra Knuyt’s artwork (Refer to my blog: The Artist) is probably worth more than that - hehe…Dsc00379

Obsession With Food

Wednesday, November 9th, 2005

Back on my recent trip to Haadyai, Thailand. I’ve been there countless of times, since I grew up in Alor Setar, which is a town in a bordering state. Well, even though there was nothing much of a difference or change in Haadyai compared to what it was, say, like about 5-7 years ago…somehow, the food and enviroment never stop to amaze me.

It has been a long time since the last time I spend a night in Haadyai. If I’m not mistaken, it was about 6 years ago. My visits would most of the time be a day trip. This time, I get to freshen the image of Haadyai’s night scene.Dsc00140_1

Armed with my faithful Sony DSC-W5, I took the streets in hopes to capture some interesting shots. Few of those which really captivate me are these shots of Muslim traders selling fried items such as chicken wings, loster prawns, quails, and also the famous pulut durian/mango.Busy_prep_for_the_ricemango

The busy streets of Haadyai town, which mainly focuses on the one-way traffic roads around Lee Garden Hotel, slowly but steadily transform into a food ma rket of sort, as the sun sets.Dsc00141

Traders such as these in the photos start to prepare for their usual daily business. While the food they sell may seem a little bit unhygenic due to the passing traffic and the dust they kick up, just about 2 feet away, they normally taste very very delicious. Price for such road-side food item is cheap. However, I did notice that the main target group of customers are tourists - mainly Malaysians. So the box of pulut with mango which costed me 45 baht may just be 30 baht if a local were to buy it.Juicy_mango_sweet

There were easily 20-30 stalls by the roadside. Mostly selling food stuff. One prominent attraction would be a make-shift tattoo stall. That dude sure manage to capture lots of attention. Especially when he’s getting down to tats some body around the street corner.

Well… since this is my first blog on such a trip. I’ll just end it here to try to keep things simple. Found out that I am starting to be obsessed with going about and taste new food and snapping shots of them. Heheh…might just turn this to a new hobby.Random_brisk_business_roadside_fried_chi

Food Galore @ Haadyai, Thailand

Wednesday, November 9th, 2005

Made a trip to Haadyai, Thailand during the Raya holidays. Spent a night there and enjoyed a great deal of food. I’ve been craving for northern, thai oriented food for a long long time ever since I started working in KL. So, I ventured to KanEng Restaurant etc.

Since I just got my Sony DSC-W5 recently, so I was keen on snapping away at stuffs that I see… especially food items. :) So here goes some shots.

Kerabu_mango_with_cuttle_fishKerabu Mango: A mixed salad of sort with small onions, "cilipadi", crispy cuttle fish & cashew nuts in some sweet sauce.

Chicken_phat_phetChicken Phat-Phet: Stir fried boneless chicken meat in spices and curry & lemon leaves, plus coconut milk. Tasted rich, spicy and hot as well.

Crab_meat_cooked_in_curryCrab Meat In Curry: Crab meat in all its glory! No hard shell. Yerp… perfect for those lazy bums who dont wanna get their hands messy with cracking ‘em open to eat some crabs. Stir fried in curry with some ladies finger and green chilli. Yummy!

Deep_fried_prawns_with_garlic_souce Deep Fried Prawns In Garlic Sauce: This has gotta be the bomb! I never miss this item whenever I go to KanEng @ Haadyai. Fresh tiger prawns almost a palm’s size for just 60 baht/prawn (price after cooked). The sweetness can still be tasted and the flesh stills sticks to the shell. And, after that… the aromatic garlic blends in…

Deep_fried_black_fishDeep Fried Black Fish: Well being directly translated from its native Thai name, it really bewilders me why the name "Black Fish". Anyway, this dish was served in some chilli sauce which was prepared with lemon juice and some other spices. Dip the crunchy layer of the fish skin and its flesh into its sauce and waalaah!! Tasted awesome!

There was another dish of Tom Yam which I left out. Well this soupy dish was really hot! What I love about having food here in this restaurant is that the price is really resonable. Put aside the fact that the prawns itself costed me 24 baht, the whole lunch was just for 70++ baht. That’s 7 dishes for 4 persons. :)

Tasted good. Price was cheap. Portion was just nice, leaving us with some room in the tummy for more in the later of the day. So, no doubt I always leave KanEng with a happy and satisfied smile.
